| Intended use | Buffer solution pH 9.18 ± 0.05 is used to establish and maintain an ion activity within narrow range. It is most commonly used to establish hydrogen-ion activity for the calibration of pH meters, in analytical procedures. It is also used to maintain stability of various dosage forms. | |||
| Principle and interpretation | Buffer is defined as a solution which resists changes in the activity of an ion on addition of substances that are expected to change the activity of that ion. Buffer capacity refers to the amount of material that may be added to solution without causing a significant change in ion activity. Buffered solutions are systems in which the ion is in equilibrium with substances capable of removing or releasing the ion. For successful completion of many pharmacopeia tests and assay requires adjustment or maintenance of a specified pH by addition of buffer solutions. In pH measurements standard buffer solutions are required for reference purposes. | |||
